The Alaska Exploration Begins

There is something exciting (or another word?) for rising before the dawn is unbroken, like Humpty Dumpty before the fall, to set forth on an adventure. We rise. We make coffee. We feed the kitties (poor abandoned furry children). We give them a final snuggle. We drive to the airport.

The flight, while 'way too long, was uneventful. For a reason only known to Delta, we went via Minneapolis. When I booked the flight last January, we'd been going Seattle. In Feb., Delta told us our flight would now go via Minneapolis. Next time, Alaska Air!

Got to our AirB&B spot and met Niki, a darling creature on her way to yoga. We chatted for a few minutes, she showed us the basics about our semi-basement apartment, and that was that. We stowed our gear & set off by foot, walking up Spangert, seemingly one of Anchorage's main streets. We passed many types of restaurants - Thai/Vietnamese, Indian/Nepali, pizza, burgers - and found the Spangert Roadhouse. Recommended by TripAdvisor reviewers, they had very good beer (!) and Jim had a BLT and a salad, and I had a good burger. They had a house-made mayo, an aioli, which was wonderful with their fries.

We walked home, Jim got 1/2 & 1/2 for the morning, and we crashed early. That before-dawn thing ... we're neither of us used to that these days. Wimps.

Anchorage - well, not so pretty, but with nice mountains. Our neighborhood is a mix of simple houses and industrial/commercial stuff. Haven't seen much more than that yet. Onward!
